The fall of communism in 1991 ushered into the former Soviet Union a new found freedom only dreamed of in the previous 70 years. No longer was the Bible a forbidden book that could send its owner to prison if discovered by the authorities. Every man, woman and child was able to attend church and openly share with their family and friends about their faith. Even large outreaches were held in sport’s stadiums that saw thousands come to Christ along with signs and wonders such as healings and miracles. This was particularly amazing for the Central Asian countries that are traditionally Muslim and hence closed to the Gospel. Church planting multiplied exponentially, reaching into Afghanistan, Iran and China.
Sadly, this is no longer the case. Over the last few years, new laws and tighter controls have been put in place and now many of these new Christians are facing tremendous persecution. Churches have been closed and fellowships moved “underground”. Christian literature is forbidden but amazingly, people can still watch Satellite TV and learn of Christ through such ministries as CNL TV. We often hear of small groups secretly gathering to watch CNL’s programs and discuss what they learn. For many, this is the only spiritual input they receive.
We greatly covet your prayers for the ministry of CNL TV, its staff, facilities, and the precious viewers we are able to watch. Please pray for God’s blessing and protection on this ministry and that we will continue to reap an huge harvest for Christ.
Since CNL's inseption, the cost of broadcasting has been paid for through two sources. On the one hand CNL receives funds paid for by its broadcasters in the form of broadcasting fees and on the other hand it receives donations through viewers and partners. In the past this has worked well but in today’s political climate things have changed dramatically. In the last 3-4 years with the turmoil between Russia and Ukraine and the subsequent sanctions placed on Russia as a result, the Russian Rouble, the Ukrainian Hryvnia and the Kazakhstan Tenge have devalued almost 100%. While giving is still at the level of the past, the value is much less. In America however, the currency is strong against the rest of the world and so we are reaching out to our brothers and sisters in the Lord in the Western World to help reach the Russian Speaking world for Christ.
